Gabriela Hasbun is a San Francisco–based portrait and documentary photographer whose work explores identity and community. Her practice is rooted in long-term relationships with the people she photographs, using portraiture to challenge stereotypes, preserve cultural histories, and create more expansive narratives of American life.

For more than fifteen years, Hasbun has documented the Black cowboy community through The New Black West, a long-term photographic project centered on the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo. What began in 2007 as an exploration of the rodeo grew into an intimate record of the people, families, traditions, and communities surrounding it. Working primarily with medium-format film, Hasbun looks beyond the spectacle of the arena to photograph the quieter moments of connection, preparation, mentorship, and everyday life that sustain Black cowboy culture.

The New Black West was published as a monograph by Chronicle Books in 2022 and has been exhibited and published nationally. Hasbun’s editorial and commercial photography has appeared in publications including The New York Times, WIRED, Vogue, Forbes, Rolling Stone, and Bloomberg, and her subjects have included artists, entrepreneurs, athletes, and cultural figures.

Born in El Salvador to Palestinian parents and raised between El Salvador and Miami, Hasbun has long been interested in how history, migration, identity, and belonging shape the way people see themselves and one another. Her work is ultimately an ongoing act of listening, witnessing, and preserving stories that deserve to be remembered.
