Mission Miracle Mile —

In 2003, I began photographing some of the Mission District’s most enduring and colorful shop owners, drawn to the character and history embedded in Mission Street. Once known as the “Mission Miracle Mile,” this stretch—running from 16th Street to Cesar Chavez—was, in the early 20th century, a thriving commercial corridor rivaling Union Square. Framed by decorative bridges at either end, it stood as a symbol of accessibility, craftsmanship, and community commerce.

The Mission has long been a neighborhood shaped by waves of immigration—home to Jewish, Irish, and Italian families, and later to a vibrant Latino community. These layers of cultural history are reflected in the small businesses that have anchored the neighborhood for decades. When I began this work, however, the Mission was already undergoing rapid transformation. Since the early 2000s, an influx of tech-driven development has introduced new businesses and rising costs, steadily reshaping the identity of the neighborhood.

This series focuses on the legacy of long-standing, family-run establishments—many of which had been part of the community for over 30 years. Places like JJ O’Connor Florists, which operated on Mission Street for more than a century, represent not just businesses but living archives of the neighborhood’s social fabric. In the years since I began photographing, many of these spaces have disappeared.

Mission Miracle Mile is both a document and an act of preservation. Through portraiture, I aim to honor the individuals behind these storefronts and to capture a moment of transition—holding onto the textures, faces, and histories of a community at risk of being erased.
